I was commissioned to renovate and extend a Victorian house by
a neighbor, who’s property dropped down a floor at the back
of the house. His twin daughters were getting older and needed

of their own and their living area was cut off from the garden
(and light) by a bedroom that took up most of the back façade.
The house is in a conservation area and changes to the exterior
profile of the house were only permitted at the back, where they
weren’t visible from the street. The design intent was to
